A Window to the Wilderness: Repairing the Cabin’s Leaking Window

There’s something truly special about the view from the upstairs window at the EHMI cabin. It’s a small window, but it perfectly frames the wilderness outside, offering a peaceful glimpse of the forest. Unfortunately, that same window had become a real headache, with a slow, stubborn leak causing damage to the wood and insulation around it. By the time we tackled it, the frame was rotting, and a simple fix wasn’t going to cut it—we had to rebuild the whole area.

Like most cabin projects, this one turned into a team effort, requiring careful planning and hard work. Over two weekends, four of us—Geoff, Wayne, Kevin, and Brian—came together to take on the repairs. Being miles from the nearest hardware store, we had to be prepared and plan every step. We spent the first weekend carefully removing the old window and assessing the damage, then the second weekend rebuilding the frame, reinsulating, and finally installing the new window. It was a satisfying job, seeing everything come together.

Now, the upstairs feels brighter than ever, and the view is as beautiful as before, but with the added satisfaction of knowing we fixed it right. Projects like these aren’t just about repairs—they’re about preserving a place that means a lot to us, a place where visitors can experience the same sense of peace and connection that we do. With the new window in place, we’re ready for the next rainstorm and whatever project comes next.
