A Winter Adventure: Trail Marking and Moonlit Reflections at The Cabin

There's always something special about reaching The Cabin on East Haven Mountain after dark, especially in the heart of winter. On December 13th, four of us (Geoff, Kent, Adam, and Wayne) began our weekend by hiking through the snowy woods under a moonlit sky. Wayne and I skinned up the trail on our touring skis, while Kent and Adam tackled the climb on snowshoes. Despite the biting cold (just 15°F!), we felt a deep calm settling in as we navigated by headlamp and Wayne’s expert trail knowledge.

Arriving at The Cabin, the glow of the wood stove was a warm welcome against the rapidly dropping temperatures outside. There’s nothing quite like the cozy relief of a well-built fire after a brisk winter journey.

Saturday Morning: Trail Work

Saturday morning greeted us with clear skies and brilliant sunshine, perfect conditions for trail marking and maintenance. Splitting into two teams, we spent the day clearing fallen trees and marking a snowmobile trail. Surrounded by silence and the beauty of fresh snow blanketing the forest, we found ourselves reflecting on how nature provides such powerful opportunities for spiritual renewal.

As evening fell, we paused our work to witness a stunning sunset that painted the horizon in rich hues of gold and crimson. Appreciating that natural beauty, we talked about it as a vivid reminder of God's presence and creativity. Later, a dazzling full moon rose, illuminating the forest with an almost magical glow and drawing our thoughts to the profound wonder of the natural world.

Sunday Evening: Deeper Connections

Our final evening together was marked by heartfelt conversation around the fire. We shared stories about times when nature brought us closer to God, moments that reminded us of the deep connection between our spirits and the wilderness around us.

This weekend at The Cabin was more than just a volunteer effort; it was a memorable mix of outdoor adventure, meaningful reflection, and deepened friendships. We returned home refreshed and grateful, carrying with us the lasting peace of time spent in God's remarkable creation.
